After nearly a year of discussions and careful planning, CORUM has reached an important milestone: Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) has approved the launch of a comprehensive colorectal cancer (CRC) patient support initiative.
A four-member CORUM delegation – Abdul Hamid Nazardin, Tengku Nazeehah Mahmood, Norazri Mohd Noh, and Tuan Haji Jamil Siran; made a successful two-day visit to HUSM to formalise this collaboration and engage with the hospital’s medical team and patients.
Day 1: Sharing the Vision, Supporting Patients
The first day focused on introducing CORUM’s role and building a shared understanding with the HUSM Colorectal Unit. The CORUM team presented the organisation’s Vision, Mission, Objectives, and Activities, highlighting CORUM’s commitment to:
- Raising awareness of colorectal cancer (CRC)
- Providing support and guidance to patients, survivors, and caregivers
The session included an active Q&A and received strong encouragement from the HUSM Colorectal Unit. CORUM would like to recognise the support and leadership of:
- Prof. Andie Dzulkarnain
- Dr. Lavanya
- Dr. Somasundram
The day ended with a meaningful hospital ward visit, where CORUM members met patients in the surgical wards and offered direct support and practical guidance to those awaiting surgery.
Day 2: Building a Patient Navigation and Peer Support Pathway
The second day centred on a focused discussion to establish a Patient Navigation Program for CRC patients at HUSM, a structured approach to help patients and families feel more supported and better guided throughout their care journey.
The CORUM delegation met with key members of the HUSM team, including:
- Dr. Ashraf
- Matron Faridah
- Head Nurse En Khairun
- Members of Unit Terapi Enterostomal (UTE)
- Dr. Lavanya (Surgical Unit)
Following an in-depth and productive discussion, and with full support from the HUSM team, CORUM and HUSM agreed on several key steps:
- Program launch in 2026: A Peer Support Program will begin at HUSM in 2026.
- Local leadership: Local CRC survivors will be identified and trained to lead the peer support effort over time.
- CORUM’s role: CORUM will provide early support, training, and oversight to help ensure the program runs smoothly and effectively.
Moving Forward Together
This visit marks the outcome of nearly a year of perseverance, teamwork, and shared commitment. CORUM extends sincere appreciation to Prof. Andie and the HUSM team, whose support and dedication helped make this collaboration possible, as well as to everyone who contributed behind the scenes to move this initiative forward.
A follow-up meeting between the HUSM Patient Navigation Team and CORUM is scheduled for February 2026, ahead of the official launch, to finalise operational details and ensure a smooth start.
CORUM congratulates the entire team involved in this achievement and looks forward to working closely with HUSM to strengthen patient support, build survivor-led care communities, and improve the colorectal cancer journey for patients and families in Kelantan and beyond.
